St. Louis Senior Portaits | What to Wear in the Winter

Now, if only we can get some snow! Wouldn’t this be a great casual look in the snow? The warm fuzzy hat and boots are cozy, but the colors will pop and stand out in that white snow!

I love this casual look for the fall or winter. The more fitted plaid top makes it more feminine. What a wonderful snow picture these would make! Top it off with a cute hat, some arm cuffs and over the boot socks, and you’ve got a polished but comfortable look for your senior portraits.

Capturing It All | Second Shooting

I have to admit, I really enjoy being a second shooter at a wedding. I love being able to help another photographer out with whatever they need as well as helping get other interesting angles. When brides don’t hire a second shooter I’m baffled! Just knowing everything can be covered in a shorter amount of time, and nothing goes un-captured (is that a real word?) when there is an additional team member there.

I’ve been fortunate to second shoot for a couple of photographers here in town. I somewhat enjoy it more than being a primary, which is why I don’t shoot wedding anymore (unless you’re someone super duper special to me). I enjoyed shooting in the past, but found that my passion is high school seniors, and so that’s what you will usually see here on my blog.

But, I thought it would be fun to see what else I love doing when second shooting…capturing the primary doing their job. If I’m back behind them with a longer lens or just in a different spot, I want to give back to them. I don’t mean in just shooting – that’s my job, what I’m being paid for. As photographers we never get our pictures taken, so I just mean giving back by photographing them while working. Makes for great images on their blogs or websites.

Here is a couple of shots I was archiving from shooting with Kellie Penn of Across the Miles Photography back in December. It was COLD. But, the spot we found right outside the church was a lifesaver to us. Genius and some of the best shots I’ve ever seen. Thanks to Kellie!

I’m Addicted to This Stuff

If you’re anything like me, you hate that your fingernails are short, and just flimsy. If I can think to do it, I would paint them and use a great top coat. But, that never lasts. I had earlier discovered nail shields from the drug store and would use them. But, the patterns available were lacking. Then, I discovered Jamberry Nails.

They are basically the highest, salon-quality products available (yes, some nail techs are now using them). There are no harsh chemicals that can damage your nails. They don’t chip and fade like regular nail polish either. We have the largest selection of designs in the world!

One of the things I love more about them vs. the drug store brands is that you can get 2-3 sets of coverage off one sheet! Plus, I enjoy the mixing and matching of them.

So, what am I getting at? I decided to become an independent consultant. This way, I could have my stash to do my nails when I HAVE TIME to do them. And, I can show them off to my friends and strangers who end up loving them too. I can’t tell you how many times I go shopping and the cashier or another customer asks me about my nails. They pretty much sell themselves.

I plan to offer these as gifts to my high school seniors in the future with their consult packets too! Hint Hint Photogs!!! Think of the possibilities!

Since I just signed up, I’m not quite ready to have a party, but if you’re local and want to host a party, I can come and show you how to put them on, and there are some prizes as well as hostess gifts too! What a fun girl’s night, right? If you just can’t wait, you can make a purchase on my website at this link:

http://hollymccaig.jamberrynails.net – I have different online parties open all the time, so just ask which one to choose from. Right now it’s “Cyndi’s Party” that you can choose from when placing your order. Currently they are buy 3 get 1 free!

Join my Facebook page here. http://facebook.com/jamberrywithholly – here I post pictures of my own nails, friend’s nails, and other fun videos to make application easier.

Hey, what about Superbowl?

A Few Thoughts on This Issue

I’ve been in the design industry for a lot of years. I started selling digital scrapbooking products back in like ’04 or ’05. I have seen piracy. A LOT. You become numb to it to a certain extent. I don’t support SOPA or PIPA. I think it is written so poorly. I believe there needs to be more protection from piracy, but these acts are not the way.

This weekend, I was once again notified of someone illegally sharing my design files. I used to get angry and mad and revengeful. Since moving over int0 the photography design side of things, I don’t see the notifications nearly as much as the digi scrap side. I think at one point we were being notified monthly of someone else sharing our hard work. I now tend to be more of a shake-your-head, disappointed, tsk tsk mentality. I’m sure that’s not the fighting way that we as artists should be. But, with crappy laws, and these things costing money, while we’re all just not making the money we used to…however.

When you’re notified that the person sharing your files is someone you have communicated with in the past, and find out that they too are a designer and photographer, it takes it to a whole other level. I’ll admit, I am not revengeful or spiteful like I was in my youth. As I approach the age of 40, I believe in karma more and more. I tend to let the crazy ways that be take care of things. Sure, I want artists to be protected, and I want to fight. So, I decided for this situation I’d just share what I learned, and what makes this even harder to swallow.

Robyn Pollman of Paperie Boutique, and contributor to Professional Photography Magazine, had first posted on my Facebook wall about finding someone sharing her files. I was on a long list of other designers whose files where discovered by this particular piracy-contributor. As most weekends go, I’m usually off the main computer and limited to my phone or iPad in short doses. So, I don’t click on a lot of links, etc. This Sunday morning, I decided to click and start looking. My blood certainly elevated in temperatures as I put two and two together on this person.

Robyn has shared the screenshots and conversations here on her site. Why did this person’s name seem familiar to me? It was because I had read that she owned a company where she sold templates, too. And, to make matters worse, I worked with her as a sponsor at Inside the Locker during our launch party contest. She contributed a prize and I advertised for her. I knew her name seemed familiar and I verified it with past emails and the post at ITL for the contest. I clicked on her site, but it’s no longer functioning, as she mentioned in her conversation with Robyn.

I went to the Two Pear Designs admin customer list, and sure enough, she’s registered there. However, she hadn’t been on the site since November. And, she hasn’t bought a thing from Two Pear (that I can tell from being registered under her name). It’s obvious the purchase she is sharing was from when Pink Ink Studios was still active (or when it was a free download on my FB page for a few weeks before I put it up for sale). It appears to be only one file, my Photoshop shapes, and maybe she didn’t pay for it. I am sure there are more designers with way more products being shared, like Robyn’s. And, in the grand scheme of things, I can only think about the people downloading the files that aren’t buying them.

You see, I am my sole provider. I have been working so hard to make a living at what I love. I have to pay for everything out of my own pocket including health insurance, doctor visits, and while I don’t have children, I do have three small dogs that I do care for. These are my choices, sure. I get by just fine. I don’t have health insurance right now because I so badly want to make things work. I do know that I can go out in the world and get a job. I’m not saying all this for a pity party. I believe whole-heartedly that my choices are my own, and I choose to see if I can continue making a living at photography and designing. What am I getting at here? You’re just stealing from me and my livelihood. I could have a little peace of mind while still continuing to do what I love, if those people would just honestly buy my products – as well as other designer’s products. This particular piracy contributor should understand…according to some of the emails shared, she’s no different as as single parent.

And, while I am a little angry and mad inside, I’m mostly disappointed. I’m sad and hurt. I’m just unsure how anyone can honestly justify taking from someone else. I know some of the other designers on this list posted that were stolen from. You’re taking food from their children’s mouths when you pirate. But, what makes me more sad, hurt, and disappointed is another artist feels this is okay.

This week, my accountant and I have been hard at work crunching numbers, budgeting and figuring costs to run my business and what I need to make. If you’re a business owner that has done all of this, and do it yearly, you know how grim it can look. We should all be supporting one another to make our industries strong and united. This is the sort of thing that kills small business like ours.

I am more than happy to help honest and deserving people. I enjoy giving things away as free downloads on my FB page and contributing to other site contests as well as our own. I feel we make our prices fair. We’re not undercutting ourselves or overpricing our products. This is the sort of thing that sometimes will set me back a bit and make me rethink selling mass volume of my designs. And, not designing, and getting a job out there in the world would certainly make my life easier.

As photographers, we get so livid and upset when we see our photography stolen. I just ask that if you’re a photographer that purchases designs from many of the template stores available to you, that you please respect us the way we respect you. Just think, if SOPA had passed, many of us would shut our doors for good out of fear. Those that would stay open because they still wanted to try, and hope they wouldn’t be attacked for copyright infringement for the littlest thing, would raise their prices tremendously to make sure they could afford good lawyers. Then, no one would be able to buy so many cute, and fun templates out there.

I won’t be contacting Brittany. I don’t want to get into any of the drama that could arise after reading how she responded to Robyn. In my experience, people are defensive in nature, and very few apologize sincerely or want to talk to you on a level that makes sense. I am always pleasantly surprised when I do meet that type of person because it’s so rare. I just wanted to share my feelings of sadness and disappointment here, publicly. Not something that I do much anymore. Robyn, thank you for sharing with me and the other designers that were faulted here. You’re courageous for taking a stand, and doing so much of this work on our behalf.

So, to leave this on a positive note, I am excited a bit, because Two Pear Designs is hosting one AMAZING giveaway next week. It starts tomorrow night, so be sure to follow the FB page over there to learn more. Hope you’re having a pleasant weekend!

So sorry to hear about this. I’m glad you addressed it here on the HMc blog tho. I loved Pink Ink & love what you are doing w/ two pears. I love the subscriber program.

I know you only make your living by the purchase of your work or your photography sessions. I’m always happy to purchase your work & even tho I’m more of a hobbyist photog, I am able to give nice gifts to our children’s grandparents with photos of their grandchildren. On occasion, I take friends photos & use your products. I do post my photos online & wouldn’t like to find my photos stolen. I have found some friends photos & designers work out there & always notify those friends when I see it & believe it has been stolen.

So glad you addressed this issue with class!

Holly - January 22, 2012 - 10:40 am

Kristi, thank you for responding. Even if a hobbyist buys my stuff, I appreciate it! I know that you’ve supported me for a long time. :)

Jamie - January 22, 2012 - 10:52 am

Wow, this is so sad and absurd and I am sorry you are dealing with this Holly. I cannot believe how she talked to you!

Holly - January 22, 2012 - 10:59 am

Jamie, that was Robyn’s conversation with her. Not mine. She was the one to discover her own files and started the dialogue with her. I’m just linking to it because she wanted to save everything for proof for her lawyer.

maggie - January 22, 2012 - 11:24 am

That just infuriates me that she is so unapologetic! People like this make me sick. I hope this is remedied soon. I’m so sorry. I hope the lawyers take care of her.

Jamie - January 22, 2012 - 1:29 pm

Holly, I saw the post on Robyn’s page this morning and couldn’t believe it (well, I could but I didn’t like what I heard) however, I did not realize that it was another photographer who was stealing these things. Your post is very well written. So sorry that you’re having to deal with this again. Hope it all blows over soon!

Tegan - January 22, 2012 - 1:57 pm

Sorry that you have to go through this and that any photographer or designer has to go through any of this. I can see why Anyone would get upset about this, especially when this is your way of making a living. Whatever comes of all of this it will be karma that comes around to get her. Let’s hope that the justice system does the right thing as well for the ones who are going to have to take that route.

Kris Gay - January 22, 2012 - 5:14 pm

WELL HOLY CRAP. That is ridiculous. 20,000 downloads too?! I don’t think I could be polite in the face of something this crazy.

Robyn - January 22, 2012 - 8:09 pm

VERY well said! Bravo! It wasn’t so much about the theft or the five bucks to me either. It was her response when confronted, and learning she was also a “designer”. She claims to have apologized, but from everyone who read it at the time, it was a not-so-sincere apology wrapped and tucked inside a nice little attack-burrito. Not cool. And she hit too many people for me to just let it slide…

Of course she’s still denying everything, but I added a screencap of one of your downloads from her account to the “stolen” site linked above – along with her FB denial. Everyone can make their own conclusions from there.

I have admired – and purchased – your work for many, many years and I am so saddened to see it disrespected in this manner!

Holly - January 22, 2012 - 10:14 pm

Robyn, I agree, the money for one thing isn’t so bad. It’s all those people downloading it at NO cost to them that is killing me. Thousands of downloads never paid for. It’s one thing to be oblivious as I was years back, younger, doing the illegal music thing and downloading – though I never shared them with anyone. I just took. I felt like crap once I started realizing how bad this is in our creative world. If you’re a photographer, or designer and you do it, then you don’t respect yourself or your own work. You should just know better. Sigh. Thanks for commenting and keeping us all aware.
