Pay It Forward | Blogging

I am no social media expert. I think that’s such a silly title any way. Most are self-proclaimed – who am I kidding, there is no degree in being a Master of Twitter. And, even though I KNOW I’m no expert, I have my own personal rules. This applies to many things in my life, and my mother thinks I should have my own “world according to Holly” rules. Silly things like, in the mall, you should always walk down the right-hand side…just like you are driving (at least in the U.S.). Makes me crazy when people go opposite and run into you. Tangent. Apologies.

Anyway, I have little rules when it comes to social media and one of them is blogging. I don’t get why people have blogs only to post once a month…if we’re lucky. I do feel that blogging is a necessity in business. My blog keeps people abreast of the newest things I’m doing, feeling, thinking, etc. It’s all about the brand you build as a business person. Sharing sneaks for my clients builds a bit of “fame” for them. It gets them excited. Even if you only post one sneak peek image, do it. It’s a level of customer service they aren’t getting at the big studio chains.

I’m always looking for new ways to improve my blogging and my physical blog. So, I thought for this Pay It Forward, I would share what I use and how I did my blog!

For one, I’m a huge fan of my own domain and WordPress. I have control issues, okay? I don’t like knowing that someone else is controlling the blog software. I like having a domain name. I was at the store the other day and had to give my email address (like I need more solicitation emails from retail stores) and the person said to me, “OH COOL! YOU HAVE YOUR OWN DOMAIN!” – I guess it’s so second nature to  me, but it made them pay attention to what I do for a living, and asked about my job. It’s advertising at the simplest level. Go figure. The level of professionalism is important to me.

So, I have my blog on its own domain, hollymccaigblog.com – why? In the rare event that my website went down, my blog might still be active. I could still communicate about my website being down. I could still remain connected. For those that don’t know, I do own Pink Ink Studios and we keep various portions of our site on separate domains for this very reason. It has happened. And, luckily, I could still communicate with our customers. It’s my security blanket.

Next, my blog theme is by ProPhoto Blogs. I have researched, gotten quotes, etc. on various other blog themes from the A-list ravers, and the price of them is not something I’m willing to sacrifice. This blog theme is reasonably priced and easy to set up on my own. If I can do something on my own, I do it. I know when I can’t and when I have to outsource something. I know what you’re thinking…how did I make the header different? Oh I’ll tell you!

I’m not a fan of Flash anymore. I know, it looks cool and all. But, in all honesty, it doesn’t work on my iPad and my iPhone. I like being able to pull up my sites for people when I’m out and about. I don’t care if you have one of those fancy sites that says it will convert for you – sometimes, it doesn’t. And, if it does…it often looks so crappy and still takes so long to load that I just bail and give up on it. I removed the Flash from my ProPhoto Blog theme header, too. I want it simple, but looking great.

So, I designed something amazing in Photoshop, then, coded it in Dreamweaver. I then, pasted that header design’s code I made in the P3 Customize menu area of my blog’s theme. Easy. If you can design, and you can code something simple in Dreamweaver (or other html software) you can do this too. Then, I simply did like everyone else with this theme, I just matched all my colors up and voila. My blog is done. If you can design, but not code. Take that to someone and get a quote. Sometimes, it’s not that expensive!

I have tried the cutesy blog storyboard templates, but I find that I don’t like them. I am drawn to large, full-sized images – individual images. So, I did away with them – well, I didn’t use them for long – and now I save all my images as 900 pixels wide and I do a sharpen on them to give them that crisp, web view ready look. And, I’m glad I did. Because, I came across a plug in that I was DYING to have!

Flaunt Books Image Voting is awesome! I love that now, my images can be voted on by my clients and their friends/family. The more they vote and tell their friends to vote, the more of a chance they get to show their images off at the top of the blog. And, the more my blog is seen. If I had all my images in a storyboard look, voting wouldn’t matter. I want them to vote on individual images. (I can choose to not allow voting, like on the image below – look at other posts to vote if you wish!)

It lets my clients interact and really push their images in front of people more and more. I love it! With that I have enabled the I LIKE button for Facebook in the P3 Customize area of the theme – these guys thought of everything. And, I’ve installed a plugin called Wibiya. This has a small bar at the bottom of your blog allowing more connections. When your readers click on the share tools, they are helping to promote your blog and your business.

And, finally, I am a big believer in filling out the SEO area of your blog theme (if this allows it) as well as setting up a Google Analytic account. You can paste this code into this theme too. Doing all this drives more traffic to your site and allows you to review stats. It’s crucial to your business to know and learn what is working and what isn’t. While most of my business comes from Facebook, Google searches are a close second. It’s so fun to hear that!

So, there you have it. My take on blogging – just one form of social media and staying in the face of everyone.

Be Awesome | St. Louis Photographer

Oh wow, it’s Tuesday! How did that happen?

I haven’t blogged in a few days. Laid low on the work front this weekend and spent all day doing some file clean up on one of my external hard drives. I should do a post on my backup system for tomorrow’s Pay It Forward, huh?

Well, it’s been way too hot to do much photographing outside. We’ve been pushing sessions to early mornings and some even a few months out. I certainly do NOT want my clients looking miserable in their photos. Makeup running down your face isn’t pretty. I don’t care how bad you want to make money. Don’t do it. Or, figure a way to make it cooler for them by beating the heat early morning. I have a hand-held air conditioner device. Fans work good too. Oh, and always try and have water on hand for you, your assistants and your clients! If they don’t mind, work indoors. If you don’t have  studio, think about the client’s home – incorporate it!

I did want to say today that we have some big news coming up. A few things are in the works and some announcements too. I was reading on another photographer’s blog about changing things up every day. Do things different. I follow a lot of photographers on Twitter. And, by doing so, I end up clicking links to their blogs through their tweets. One thing I often find on some is that they don’t do a very good job at keeping my interest. They aren’t thinking outside of the box. Boring is the best word to describe it.

A few weeks ago, I was feeling a bit down because business was really slow. But, then I was reminded by my friend that I’m lucky. I’m lucky to be in a city that has a lot of photographers that challenge me to do better and think outside of the box. Having little to no competition can put you in a rut. Your work looks the same within your own business. Sure, you can get away with that, and you’re making money. But, are your images stellar? From what I’ve seen. No. Are you really satisfied with just clicking and taking a credit card? Or, do you want to be your best?

So, if you have no competition, why not challenge yourself to do something different? This is all a part of my new outlook. Opportunities present themselves to us in many forms. Just because business is slow doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep shooting or improving your business. We’re scouting locations, looking at new ways to shoot, and talking to our seniors. We’re listening to them and learning about what they love, don’t love. What they do and don’t do. How things are in their area. We have new projects planned – and by “we” – I mean those that work with me and inspire me.

What do I mean by change? Well, for starters – everyone “knows” me from the iPhone photos I would take of my seniors. I still do this. But, everyone has started doing this too. I’m not the innovator of this idea, but I don’t want to be confused with what everyone else in my area is doing. So, we went bigger. Hello iPads!

That will get them talking again! Get out of your ruts. Think different. Make yourself be unique and awesome.

Pay It Forward | DVD Packaging

As I was preparing last wedding DVD delivery, I thought it would be great to take some photos of my packaging to share with you. This is just how I do my DVDs. Maybe later I will show you portrait packaging.

To start, I do print my on DVDs. I have an EPSON Stylus Photo R320 that prints direct on DVDs. I really need to invest in larger-sized DVDs for wedding clients because I end up with about five of these when I’m finished. You can purchase these pretty much anywhere. I simply design my label in Photoshop and use the EPSON software for direct print to DVD to set it up and print it.

I put them in a DVD tin. If it’s just one DVD, then it goes in the insert that comes in these tins. If it’s multiple, then I put them each in their own CD sleeve with window and remove the little insert inside the tin so they all fit perfectly. I purchase these DVD tins at American Digital online.

When it’s all done, I tie a ribbon around it. I purchase large spools of these through Bags & Bows. I have custom Thank You tags through Pro DPI (yes, they come folded and hole-punched already. It’s sort of like a business card for me. And, buttons from Pure Buttons. If this were something the client would pick up, the item would go in a brown Kraft shopping bag with the ribbon and thank you tag on the handle, with the button placed there. This is actually being mailed to the client, out of town. So, it gets wrapped in tissue paper and a sticker goes on that with my contact info to be mailed.

That’s it! (other than I need new scissors because my ribbon edges above look horrible – I did fix these).

Pay It Forward | Session Albums

This summer, one of the products I’ve started to offer my clients is the “Session Album”. Unlike a complete, digitally designed album, this album gives the client the opportunity to pick 10 to 20 of their favorite images and have them in a very nice, elegant book. The cost is a little lower for them as opposed to a designed album and the turnaround is a bit quicker as well.

I use Finao Upper Elements for my Session Albums. I have a 4 x 5 offering that holds 10 of their favorite images. And, I offer an 8 x 12 book that holds 20 images. I prefer these over the square designs because they are much better crops of the images when you are including a full photograph on a page. The 8 x 12 is true to my camera’s crop and it’s my absolute favorite size. So, when a client can’t decide which pictures to get, this is an awesome way for them to grab up their favorites and have them in a beautiful keepsake book.

The amount of swatches for book covers can be overwhelming with Finao, but if you, the photographer, keep it simple regarding choices to your clients, you make it easier. By offering just two sizes, I’ve already made it easy. Now, they just get to choose the cover offerings available. I don’t do anything fancy with these like embossing or cut-outs. They are easy, and meant to be quicker turnarounds for my client. Photographers, don’t be afraid of peel & stick book. Finao has the easiest instructions on their website to use. It’s easier than you think!

Pay It Forward | Who Do You Read?

I have never actually been asked this question, but I often find myself wondering who the photographers that I admire read.

You know? Blogs.

So, I thought that for this Pay It Forward, I would tell you who inspires me and who I read. I don’t actually read other blogs of St. Louis photographers. It isn’t because I don’t admire them, or want to support them. It has NOTHING to do with that. I find that when I am constantly watching what my competition – I hate that word because I like to think we are all friends here – does I can A) get down on myself. I end up questioning every single ability that I have and the jealousy monster hits and B) I will be more apt to not find myself subconsciously imitating them.

I prefer that my local photographer friends and me and are on a more personal level that we can share via email and at lunch or with a cup of coffee. Then, it becomes a support system, rather than a secret, “I’m watching you” type of feeling. Does that make sense? So, with that, I love my local photographer friends, VERY VERY much! I just trust that they share with me on a personal level what is going on with them.

Who do I read? It’s a pretty short list. I have a list of inspiration sites I read that have more to do with design than anything. But, for photography, I read:

Altmix Photography – I am always wowed by this couple. I love their style, so so much. I often think if I ever wanted someone to take my picture, it would be them! I have never talked to them, but if they are reading this…I bow to you!

Haute Shots – Stacie is an inspiration. Such a fun, down-to-earth, and friendly person. I cannot wait to finally meet this woman in person. She knows her stuff and rocks at the boudoir. Best I’ve ever seen!

Momentary Bliss - I adore Maria. I love her photography because she has such a creative composition with her work. And, she’s super nice.

Michelle Sullivan – I found her work recently and anxiously await for my Google Reader to tell me she has a new post up!

Jessica Strickland – her weddings and color in her photos amaze me. I swoon!

That’s it! The ones that I read regularly. I told you, I don’t do a lot of subscribing to photography blogs. I do however, like to click on links in my favorite inspiration sites like Southern Weddings, Style Me Pretty and Green Wedding Shoes

And, because I hate posts without photos – here is a Flashback from a year ago – the 80′s Party!
