Harrison’s Hope | Saving Lives

Life is hectic and life gets in the way, however the safety of our children should be our top priority. Each year thousands of children are left unattended in and around cars and most people underestimate the potential consequences. Harrison’s Hope is a national, nonprofit organization committed to educating children and caregivers about the dangers of children being left alone in and around cars.

I’m not sure what the year was when I met Terrill Struttmann. But, it was a tough one. Both of us participating in a program that allowed us the fortunate opportunity to work through some of the grief and life’s struggles we were dealing with. Me, the loss of my father and sister. For Terrill, it was the tragic death of Harrison.

I related so much to his grief and I began to learn about the strong-willed woman he called his wife. Her name, Michelle. I agreed to participate in the second level of the program and I knew that Michelle would be in it. I also knew that we would be partnered up with someone in this group. I told myself, and my friend, I hope to God that I was not being partnered with Michelle. I had never met her before. All I had to go on was the tough, feisty description that Terrill had given of her. But, he loved her so much and I knew there had to be more to her than that. I just wasn’t up to finding out about that through a partnership.

The forces obviously heard my plea and that first day, sure enough, Michelle and I were partnered together. Ironic, right?

We shared more than I’ve ever shared with anyone in my life. She helped me in so many ways and I hope that I did the same for her. Both Terrill and Michelle are what I would call life-long friends. Even though we don’t see each other often, over the years, I can count on the events of their charity honoring their son, Harrison, to see them. It’s such a small part I play, but I can’t imagine not doing it.

This is my third time photographing their annual dinner auction. It’s an amazing event. And, I come away meeting some remarkable people. At our table were some amazing ladies with the magazine, C3 Magazine. It was an honor to meet them, and get to know them. Their magazine is something to be talked about. It focuses solely on philanthropic spirit and it’s FREE!

I’m pleased to share this charitable organization with you all – please visit their website and give, volunteer, and become aware about the dangers of children being left alone in and around cars.

My apologies, the video is a little low quality. I’m learning a new program and trying to get the compression just right to meet the maximum upload guidelines at Vimeo!

Elizabeth & Eric | A Love Story (Dogtown, STL)

Last Thursday it was raining. Yes, raining. Whoa! Surprised? It is spring in St. Louis so that shouldn’t really surprise anyone. But, it was still quite chilly. I have always wanted to capture a cute couple with rainboots and umbrellas for the engagement session. You just can’t always plan for that. Convincing a client that the rain is okay to shoot in isn’t always easy to do. But, Elizabeth & Eric were up for it. My mom was a trooper assistant, holding an umbrella over me and my camera – and battling the frigid wind at the end. We won’t discuss the possibility of me and Eric both getting snapped by a traffic cam (shhh!)

They met on a blind date, just down the street from where Elizabeth lived, in Dogtown. They met on the corner of Plateau and McCausland and Elizabeth shares that Eric remembered vividly stepping on her foot. Elizabeth doesn’t remember. What she remembers is texting her best friend while standing on the corner: This is where I am and this is what I’m wearing…you know, in case something happened to her. Hearing stories of how couples meet are so cute. And, now, the two are planning their June nuptials. I’m so excited for them.

It was the perfect setting to shoot in Olympia, where they had their first date. The owner was so generous to allow us free reign of their restaurant. You don’t find that kind of hospitality too often. I found it more fitting to put their story of photos into a slideshow because well, I just loved too many to pick a few to blog. Be sure to come to the blog if you’re in a feed reader – to experience the full slideshow with music.

St. Louis Senior Portraits | Tara in Downtown STL

Tara represents our studio at her school, Bayless High School. Pretty quickly she mentioned the graffiti wall downtown by the river, so that’s what we did! It gave me an opportunity to explore a little down there and we found some pretty cool spots under all the elevated train tracks (which was a little scary with trains overhead).

I like to think of Tara as our fun, rocker chic! She loves her different shoes (as I was quickly told that she matches them to everything) and she wears her pink shades pretty well if I do say so myself. I have known Tara for a while now…her mom works with my mom and her dad is my mechanic that always rescues me in a pinch. The red beastly car that I drive still keeps on trucking thanks to Mike! This is one great family and maybe you remember from the old blog (that’s Tara’s niece).

Tara, here are you sneak peeks from the studio and downtown last week! Enjoy!

St. Louis Wedding Photography | Jeannie’s Trash the Dress Session

Another awesome Trash the Dress bride! Jeannie is the sweetest person that I’ve met in a long time! So excited about this session, Jeannie was referred to me by another talented photographer, Teri Eddy. When I put the call out for this event, there was Jeannie! In love with the color pink, and ready to do whatever we wanted, I was so happy. Her hubby came along too to make for a completely different type of session.

I love how everything turned out and how dramatic and beautiful they both look. I am lucky that I get to see them both again when we get to photograph her husband, Dennis, sister’s wedding later this year. All the connections, St. Louis is such a small, big town, isn’t it?

Here are her peeks! I love that we put her in the studio with the white on the funky love seat!

I put a call out for brides wanting to trash their dresses for me on Twitter and Facebook, and in a matter of hours we had four willing models lined up. I have wanted to do this type of session forever and really want to show off these types of images in our more conservative region of the United States. It’s something that I think can be a lot of fun.

With many reasons to do a session like this – do you really think you’ll wear your dress again in 20 years? Did you just get divorced? Why not have fun and feel like a fashion model for the day? If you’re not that type, no biggy!

St. Louis Wedding Photography | Elizabeth’s Trash the Dress Session

You’re sure to see a lot of Elizabeth in the future! I am shooting her wedding in June and just did her engagement session this week. And, Elizabeth rocks because she watches lots of America’s Next Top Model and could give us the poses. No really, she did! Her personality is so animated and elegant. I love talking to her, hearing her tell stories, and now, photographing her!

I met Elizabeth through my friend, Maura, last year. When I posted that I was doing this call for Trash the Dress, Elizabeth approached me about doing a more vintage look with a dress she purchased at a thrift store for her graduation. This look was perfect! So different and unique from the others we were doing. Makeup artist, Elisabeth, said that we had to go for an Alice and Wonderland inspiration and called it Mad Hatter. I agree. The coat really finished up the look.

I love the outcome! Don’t you? Thanks Elizabeth for rocking it, vintage style!
