Pay It Forward | DVD Packaging

As I was preparing last wedding DVD delivery, I thought it would be great to take some photos of my packaging to share with you. This is just how I do my DVDs. Maybe later I will show you portrait packaging.

To start, I do print my on DVDs. I have an EPSON Stylus Photo R320 that prints direct on DVDs. I really need to invest in larger-sized DVDs for wedding clients because I end up with about five of these when I’m finished. You can purchase these pretty much anywhere. I simply design my label in Photoshop and use the EPSON software for direct print to DVD to set it up and print it.

I put them in a DVD tin. If it’s just one DVD, then it goes in the insert that comes in these tins. If it’s multiple, then I put them each in their own CD sleeve with window and remove the little insert inside the tin so they all fit perfectly. I purchase these DVD tins at American Digital online.

When it’s all done, I tie a ribbon around it. I purchase large spools of these through Bags & Bows. I have custom Thank You tags through Pro DPI (yes, they come folded and hole-punched already. It’s sort of like a business card for me. And, buttons from Pure Buttons. If this were something the client would pick up, the item would go in a brown Kraft shopping bag with the ribbon and thank you tag on the handle, with the button placed there. This is actually being mailed to the client, out of town. So, it gets wrapped in tissue paper and a sticker goes on that with my contact info to be mailed.

That’s it! (other than I need new scissors because my ribbon edges above look horrible – I did fix these).

St. Louis Senior Portrait Artist | Amy

As a photographer in St. Louis, one of the things I love is the summer (just not the heat and humidity). I love the senior portrait season. I love that I get to help the junior class advance towards one of the most important moments in their lives, their senior year. It’s an honor, and a privilege for me to take their pictures. While the photography is absolutely my number one love, meeting these kids and getting to know them and their families is something I never knew would happen to the level it has.

Here’s the separation of this client: I met Jane and Louis through Twitter because of following the Toasted Rav staff there. Jane introduced me to one of her former employees, Megan who is sisters with this client, Amy. See how this works? Referrals are the best.

Amy is a very talented young lady who attends Lafayette High School. However, she is moving, so I’ll be sad to see her family go. Meeting her, her mother, and Megan have been a joy. Amy’s guitar and song writing is very important to her. I can’t wait to one day see this girl in concert. Here are some of my favorites from her session the other week.

It’s All About Me | Week 2

Remember this post? I kind of didn’t get follow through with it all.

I’m a little bit disappointed in myself. I do this a lot. I have these grand plans and I start out great and then let it all slide. Or, I think I can accomplish so much in such a little amount of time. Why do I do this? Is it that I try to do too much? Or is it that I secretly want the failures? I am not quite sure. I don’t know if that will ever change for me. But, I know I want to try again this week.

I did do Day 1 on my list. I cleaned the office. I cleaned it…not organized it. By this, I mean, the floors are clean, the desktops are clean. However, the bookcases got what was all over the floor piled onto them. It’s in no real order. But that wasn’t my goal. So, I do feel like I kept day one. Day 2, I did attempt this and got as far caught up through the end of May. I have my folders more organized, and am ready to continue tomorrow (Tuesdays) with finalizing my accounting for June at least. Day 3, nothing. I did not dream. I did not work on my idea of what my office should be like. And, we know that Day 4 just got ignored.

So, while I did start out great, I didn’t complete my tasks at hand. Maybe it’s just too much for one week. I am just one person and if we could plan all of our days the way we would expect them to turn out, then we’d all be successful and rich and life would be easy. But, instead, we get unexpected phone calls, or fires to put out. I dream big, but my follow through isn’t as big. I think it’s time to back off a bit and keep it small.

Which brings me to week 2 of this All About Me thing – it’s Monday, a new week and a new start. Actually, every day is a new start. I will continue to follow through with my accounting on Tuesdays as I planned last week. That’s a given. But, this week, I’m not going to pick up where I left off last week. There is something bigger that I must do – however, it’s one thing – one thing to keep on task this week.

I confess…I have had no real business plan. I mean, nothing on paper. It’s all in my head. And, it always sounds good and exciting. Since I’ve been in business, I’ve thought about it. I’ve talked about it. Setting goals like these should be part of my plan. My plan for the business and my plan for my life. I’ve always said that when I write things down, they tend to get done. I often feel overwhelmed with tasks and to-dos, but when I write them down, they don’t seem nearly as bad.

This is what I will work on this week. I am excited. It doesn’t have to be pretty or perfect, or follow any type of rules. It’s about my vision, my individual goals, my marketing efforts, education, and charity – it’s not set in stone. It’s a work in progress. It will be ever-changing as I grow and my business grows. I’ve bought a bunch of books in the past and always felt that had to be one way to write my plan. But there doesn’t have to be. It can be any way I want. So long as it’s written down. It’s real then. It’s a purpose for what I have been doing these past several years in business.

P.S. – I think my seniors are pretty cool:

Pay It Forward | Session Albums

This summer, one of the products I’ve started to offer my clients is the “Session Album”. Unlike a complete, digitally designed album, this album gives the client the opportunity to pick 10 to 20 of their favorite images and have them in a very nice, elegant book. The cost is a little lower for them as opposed to a designed album and the turnaround is a bit quicker as well.

I use Finao Upper Elements for my Session Albums. I have a 4 x 5 offering that holds 10 of their favorite images. And, I offer an 8 x 12 book that holds 20 images. I prefer these over the square designs because they are much better crops of the images when you are including a full photograph on a page. The 8 x 12 is true to my camera’s crop and it’s my absolute favorite size. So, when a client can’t decide which pictures to get, this is an awesome way for them to grab up their favorites and have them in a beautiful keepsake book.

The amount of swatches for book covers can be overwhelming with Finao, but if you, the photographer, keep it simple regarding choices to your clients, you make it easier. By offering just two sizes, I’ve already made it easy. Now, they just get to choose the cover offerings available. I don’t do anything fancy with these like embossing or cut-outs. They are easy, and meant to be quicker turnarounds for my client. Photographers, don’t be afraid of peel & stick book. Finao has the easiest instructions on their website to use. It’s easier than you think!
