Exploring St. Louis

On Friday, Christy and I did a little location scouting. While it ended up being more than just that, I did take my camera. I wanted to shoot anything I found interesting. However, it seems I just shot a few things in Lafayette Square and Soulard. Then, I forgot I had my camera. Well, not really. It was weighing down my shoulder in my purse. OUCH.

Christy moved here from California and really hasn’t explored the city and it was a great opportunity to show her around. We pretty much looped from Kirkwood to Webster to Lafayette Square to Soulard to downtown to The Loop and then over to Maplewood. We found a few antique stores to gawk in (my fav) and had some yummy lunch at Fitz’s and a cupcake at Jillys. It was a great day. But, exhausting.

We found some pretty neat locations and have some ideas for some types of shoots we want to try. If anything, our city really is inspiring. The history and the buildings fascinate me. I’ve always been interested in things that are old. I wonder often about the stories they could tell.

Anyway. Here are some familiar scenes to most of STL city locals.

Weddings | A lot of Work | And a Lot of Fun

I book about five weddings a year. I’m trying to keep it at that. I love weddings. I just don’t want to use up every weekend in my calendar. So, I committed to stick with a limit and am now doing just one a month. They are a lot of work. It’s a full day of hustling and bustling. It’s a full day of laughter and tears. Not everyone is cut out to be part of the wedding business. It can test you and it can break you, if you let it.

Keeping cool and composed while under stress at times can be difficult. But, when it’s over, you marvel in the joy of the memories you created for someone’s special day. Nothing else compares. However, in the midst of those stressful moments I love looking back at the fun times my team has at weddings. Yes, we sneak a few shots in for our own reminders that life is about having a great time.

These are photos of my team from Lynette & Kent’s wedding in June. Audra Little was in town from Phoenix second shooting for me. These make me smile.

The photo booth team is sometimes REALLY busy, and sometimes, they are just hanging out waiting on the next fun-loving subject to throw on a boa! Or, getting me a piece of cake!:)

St. Louis Senior Portraits | Kristen Model for Lafayette High School

Fridays are always fun – revisiting our senior model sessions. Getting to share more from their shoot with you all. They like it too, because they get more Facebook profile images to use. Win-Win! This week, we’re spotlighting our Lafayette High School model, Kristen. With some experience in front of the camera, she was a breeze to photograph! And, our locations were rockin’! I really do love shooting in the studio, but I am more so smitten with the spot we have found in downtown St. Louis – not the norm of course!

Get to know Kristen!

My nickname is: Kristie, KP, Perry…no one ever calls me Kristen, I swear!

I graduate in 2011 and it can’t come soon enough!

The last thing I ate was a bowl of grapes and strawberries…almost always on a health binge.

My favorite color is teal.

My dream job is something in humanitarianism – no doubt in my mind, anymore. I want to make a true difference in the world. It takes one person to start a revolution.

Music is the love of my life – I really can’t pick a favorite.

I like Cosmo magazine.

If I had $1000, I would pay for my insurance up front on my car…or I’d take a summer vacation somewhere.

My Seniors Kick Your Senior’s Butts!

Okay, I don’t condone fighting. I just thought it was funny as a title. I mean, I do think they are pretty darned awesome. And, they are some of the coolest kids around town. Just let me brag, okay?

A few weeks ago, four of my senior models came into the studio to do some video work for me (which you can see here on our website). Afterward, I had them do some silly faces for me and shot a few fun images for them. I believe in taking care of these kids. They are your faces for a full year. They show off your work. And, if you do something a little extra with them they tend to be more and more excited about your studio. Plus, there’s a whole lot of fun and laughter going on when we’re together. Extra pictures and wallets are just a perk!

Callie, Sam, Brooke and Lexie were my video stars. And, yah, I still think my senior clients kick your senior’s butts!;)

Be Awesome | St. Louis Photographer

Oh wow, it’s Tuesday! How did that happen?

I haven’t blogged in a few days. Laid low on the work front this weekend and spent all day doing some file clean up on one of my external hard drives. I should do a post on my backup system for tomorrow’s Pay It Forward, huh?

Well, it’s been way too hot to do much photographing outside. We’ve been pushing sessions to early mornings and some even a few months out. I certainly do NOT want my clients looking miserable in their photos. Makeup running down your face isn’t pretty. I don’t care how bad you want to make money. Don’t do it. Or, figure a way to make it cooler for them by beating the heat early morning. I have a hand-held air conditioner device. Fans work good too. Oh, and always try and have water on hand for you, your assistants and your clients! If they don’t mind, work indoors. If you don’t have  studio, think about the client’s home – incorporate it!

I did want to say today that we have some big news coming up. A few things are in the works and some announcements too. I was reading on another photographer’s blog about changing things up every day. Do things different. I follow a lot of photographers on Twitter. And, by doing so, I end up clicking links to their blogs through their tweets. One thing I often find on some is that they don’t do a very good job at keeping my interest. They aren’t thinking outside of the box. Boring is the best word to describe it.

A few weeks ago, I was feeling a bit down because business was really slow. But, then I was reminded by my friend that I’m lucky. I’m lucky to be in a city that has a lot of photographers that challenge me to do better and think outside of the box. Having little to no competition can put you in a rut. Your work looks the same within your own business. Sure, you can get away with that, and you’re making money. But, are your images stellar? From what I’ve seen. No. Are you really satisfied with just clicking and taking a credit card? Or, do you want to be your best?

So, if you have no competition, why not challenge yourself to do something different? This is all a part of my new outlook. Opportunities present themselves to us in many forms. Just because business is slow doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep shooting or improving your business. We’re scouting locations, looking at new ways to shoot, and talking to our seniors. We’re listening to them and learning about what they love, don’t love. What they do and don’t do. How things are in their area. We have new projects planned – and by “we” – I mean those that work with me and inspire me.

What do I mean by change? Well, for starters – everyone “knows” me from the iPhone photos I would take of my seniors. I still do this. But, everyone has started doing this too. I’m not the innovator of this idea, but I don’t want to be confused with what everyone else in my area is doing. So, we went bigger. Hello iPads!

That will get them talking again! Get out of your ruts. Think different. Make yourself be unique and awesome.
