I have a list of things I do or can look to when I’m blocked creatively. I tend to:
- Go to Pinterest
- Look back at old magazines (home and decor, crafting, clothing catalogs)
- Watch a visually striking movie
- Go outside and sit with the dogs
- Shop
I’m blocked. I’m creatively blocked. I have nothing.
Let’s face it, it’s way too hot to go outside and sit with the dogs. I go out for about five minutes and melt. I would also love to just go out and shoot a couple ideas I have but I don’t dare melt a poor model’s face off in this humidity.
My mom said I should go to Target because that usually inspires me. It does. However, with a shredded car tire now with doughnut while I save money to buy a new one, I am not going anywhere lately.
I’ve not been able to find a movie that strikes my fancy visually. I’ve been scouring Netflix.
I’ve been through every magazine this week, twice.
And, last night, I “Pinned” the crap out of things from my overflowing Google Feed Reader.
I still have nothing. This sucks for someone that makes their entire living off being creative. Here’s hoping it doesn’t last long.
So, what do YOU do to unblock your creativity? Yes, I have cranked music like Justin Timberlake and Queen while I danced around my office, too.![]()

Jennifer - Hi Holly! I’m with you!
One movie that has a really inspirational section to it is “American Beauty” – now, the ending is pretty disturbing (okay, well the whole thing is), but all of the sections with the boy next door who is a filmmaker and talks about filming a plastic bag… well, I ahve never watched the film more than once, but that section sticks with me about the beauty of simplicity. I’m a mini film buff, but that is the only film I can think of at the moment. I know there are more out there!
Lani Palmer - I’m a recovering workaholic. I used to base my worth on my productivity or busy-ness. This year God has really been speaking to me about the importance of rest. I’m reading a book right now called Weird by Craig Groeschel that really hit my family with conviction. And we’ve been surprised to see how much our creativity and spirits have rebounded from being rested. So I guess what I’m encouraging you to do is nothing. Just be still. Practice it weekly or even for just 5 minutes a day. Get away from media and technology for a while…It really does make a difference to work from our rest instead of just resting from our work!
