How Does a Graphic Artist Figure Furniture Placement?

So, how does a graphic artist figure furniture placement? Easy…she takes measurements and then opens up Adobe Illustrator. In fact, I even have large pieces of kraft paper on my floor cut into the exact sizes of the furniture. I know what furniture and which elements I WANT in the room, there are just a few logistics for other needs that I have to consider…like my honkin computer system setup.

As many of you know, I’ve collected old antiques for the studio for a few years now and well, I’m bringing them home to incorporate into my home office, since I’m not shooting studio anymore at this time. My favorite are my two old white church doors that will go in front of my closet. Until I can really come up with a way to install them, they will just be in front of it. I don’t really go into that closet much as it is. But, luckily, I have space to move them if I need to – they are heavy! I have seen these setups for barn doors on sliders, but that’s best for a one-door setup. Not wide like this closet.

I also have four awesome old salvage windows that my mom’s friend that owns Swan Cottage in Webster brought in for me. At least two of them will go on the far wall. The buffet is really an old antique dresser that I’ll place underneath. It will store office and craft supplies and house vignettes of awesome collections.

My brother was supposed to hang my chandelier this weekend, but I panicked and knew I had to do this placement setup first. Because, well, I wasn’t sure what table I’d bring home to place in the middle of the room to do crafts and just sit-down stuff at. It’s the barn table I got a few years ago at an antique store that I have decided to go with. So, now I know where the chandelier will hang and how low. We painted those Saturday evening – I can’t wait to bling it!

I have decided I will stay with the small desk I have now – I know, I complained before. But, it’s what I have to do for the time being. I may be on the lookout for the perfect setup. My only problem is all this computer gear – My Mac Pro tower, the Drobo, the EHDs, the two printers. It’s taken over the bedroom and I’m ready to be done to get that room back again! Above my desk, I’m making one of those chicken wire boards with an old frame I got from Goodwill several years ago. My other concern is desk lighting. I really can’t put a lamp on the desk. Would overhead pendants look weird, with the chandelier already hanging down?

In the corner, I hope to put my green upholstered chair and build a woodcrate doggy bed for the pups (not like they won’t be sleeping in the chair). And, finally my stacked suitcases in the other corner, full of crafty goodness.

Those are the plans. I’ve thought about it a lot. I have this in front of me, and can’t really even do all this for a few weeks because of moving my flooring home and needing strong hands and a truck to do just that. Plus, I’m antiquing some of my pieces of furniture. Will I make my February deadline?
