I’ve Never Been More Determined

I am so determined to complete this project. I’m over the pit that my bedroom has become. This temporary solution is driving me bananas.

When I started the remodel project, I said, “oh this will be simple, just a little paint and move some furniture home from the studio.”

It never is that simple. I always overestimate my abilities. Then, I get really really impatient. And, my expenses go up. WAY up.

Since I got the wild hair to trim out the window with casing, I have made two trips to both Lowe’s and Home Depot. After today, I will need to go back. Oh, and thinking that buying two boards for the main piece is a good idea, yeah, it is. You will inevitably screw one up. Hey, what’s $10? That crap is adding up.

Today, I laughed as I told the cashier at Home Depot, “see you again, soon!” I meant it.

I brought out the super duper mitre saw and started my work.

Taking measurements by yourself, of a really large window is not easy. I got clever and put in some nails to latch my tape measure to. That helped. It’s over 80″ long.

I really hate that little ledge in the window – it’s so old school. But, honestly, the whole window is old school. It needs to be replaced really bad. So, when that can be afforded, it will come out. I wasn’t sure how I was going to case the window around that until I started putting things together. No, the roller is not wet with paint in that shot.

Board 1 – SCREW UP – I forgot to account for the two side trims that I wanted to go across it.

Construction glue is a must. And, you can tell, I picked up some really rough wood on purpose. I plan to age it and antique it and that is what I wanted to add character to it all. Less work for me!

I finally got these pieces up – yes, I hung that top piece all by myself. Heavy, and a challenge, but I did it. I put the little deco squares down there which helped me visualize the piece that I will need to go across the bottom. That was easy. now, to figure out what the hell to put on the top to finish it out. I bought something that just won’t work, but I can use it in something else. Once I figure out the best piece for the top and put on the other detail trim, I will be happy.

The scroll piece I glued with construction/wood glue – got that at Lowes but they have them at Home Depot too.

You can see where I gave in and let go of the perfectionist edging painting job at the top of this. I plan on crown molding so I just put up one coat on the ceiling. A little is shining through but I got over it. Fast. Painting with painters tape is awful. I could not find any that didn’t seep through.

Once the trim work is finished, I can caulk and then start painting and antiquing it. Now, to find freakin’ curtains…Pottery Barn is out of stock until February 4th. Meh.

I can’t wait to show you the finished product in a few days!

Cherie - Give up on the painters tape, and just free hand it. It ends up looking way better and is far less frustrating. If you have a steady enough hand to get sharp pictures in low light without flash, you have a steady enough hand to free hand your trim and ceilings. It seems a little intimidating at first, but you’ll see just how much easier it is. If you mess up, you can wipe it off quick before it drives. With tape, you don’t know where you messed up until it is already dry. That is FRUSTRATING!

Cherie - I meant before it “dries”, not “drives”.
